Bryant Park Hill Climb
Competition Report September 2025 - Graeme Ruby
Leading up to our Bryant Park Hillclimb event on 26th August I was not feeling a lot of love as the forecast had been a top temperature of 12 and 95% chance of rain. We had decided to go up on Saturday and do the afternoon practise. We all arrived to a dry track but cold and overcast. Practise was good with a good extended course of a full figure 8 run with an extra lap around the bottom of the 8. This meant between about 100 sec and 140 seconds for each run. Regulars Brendan Sullivan, Chris Freeman, Nick Wood, Craig Ballinger, Ross Boyd and myself were joined by nervous new competitors Charlie Ogle and Garry Toulmin. After practise we went on to our accommodation with 4 of us staying at Federation University at Churchill. Good accommodation and lots of amusement around working out how to connect to Wi-Fi so we could watch the F1. We enjoyed the local Pizza washed down with a little Red or several.
Each time I woke up over-night it was bucketing down and by morning it was still light rain. The track was wet, cold and still raining. By the start of our first run the rain had all but stopped but still water running on the track so first runs were very cautious. Craig completed most of the course and as he got on to the short straight gave it a bit too much and ended up spinning but kept it on track. By the third run at about 2.30 the track had a dry line but still a couple of wet patches and most competitors did their fastest runs. A couple of cars tried a little hard towards the end of run 3 just as light mist started and came off. Most of us packed up but Brendan had another run and did his fastest time in the wet. Well done. Congratulations to Charlie Ogle and Garry Toulmin for the careful approach and neat way they handled the course. The Churchill group stayed on and enjoyed a very nice Pasta courtesy if Nick washed down of course with a nice red. Coming up we have a Motorkhana on 14th September followed by the Phillip Island Sprints on 21st September.
